Elements of Microstructure

Lecture, Fri, 2.00 - 5.30 pm, IC 02/718, 15 appointments, start: 17.10.2025

SWS: 4, credit points: 6

Lecturers: Prof. Dr. Alexander Kauffmann, Prof. Dr. Tong Li

Language: English

Description:
Students will develop a first qualitative and comprehensive view of all basic elements of materials science and engineering, which are important to understand the evolution of materials microstructure during processing and service. They learn basic facts about the solid state, about crystal defects, about thermodynamic stability, about materials kinetics and about phase transformation. They also acquire basic knowledge about materials characterization. With these basics about microstructures
and their characterisation they are enabled to study and understand advanced textbooks on materials science independently.

Requirements:
This course is an introduction to the microstructure of engineering materials. It is targeted towards students of the Master's Course "Materials Science and Simulation", but is also open to all other students, postdocs and guests who are interested in the basic principles underlying materials microstructures and methods for their analysis.

All lectures and course materials will be in English.
